Twitter has been instrumental in helping the Iranian people get their story out during this crisis. Thankfully things seem to be slightly more quiet at least for the moment -- there was another rally not too long ago of maybe 500,000 people, and supposedly the police are on the protesters' side and the Basij violence is dying down -- and one guy we've been following at ONTDP has had more time to tweet:

# far as eye can see people in every corner people everywhere...revolution is close to end...ghandi would be proud #IranElection

# i can not count the numbers to big #IranElection

# when all these troubles behind us i will get my camera back and go to the park with my daughter

# i will bring my brother and girl friend and we will say mullahs are so old their ideas are not modern and we will laugh and be free

# homosexuals will not die woman will not be stone to death we will be friends with world

i realize now i do not fear death... i fear my daughter will not be free when i die
- From the Twitter of an Iranian medical student

"If it bothers you so much, then why don't you stop watching?" seems to be the question of the last few days from my friends and family who know how invested I have become in the cause of the Iranian people (as I have explained in great detail here) The answer is simple: one day of caring is not enough. We must be the voice for the people of Iran who would otherwise be silenced. They are without reliable news sources, they are without mobile phone calls, text messaging, facebook, twitter, youtube, AIM, Yahoo, Google, and pretty much every other useful outlet for information you can think of. Yet they persist on the streets and on the internet in any way they can. The least we can do, whether we are across continents, oceans, or time zones, is spread their words safely.

We're thinking of you, Iran.

I feel pretty awful about this. It's frustrating to know that even if the United States were to stick our fingers in the middle of this mess, it would probably only make things worse.

Good luck and godspeed to the Iranian people.

I didn't think I was going to get to go, but looks like I'll be tagging along with some friends to Toronto Monday through Thursday-Friday :) (We're also going to stop at Niagra Falls along the way \o/)

What does this mean for you? Well, if you want to get ahold of me, access is going to be spotty for a while -- I'm currently planning on bringing my laptop, but that may change and I'm fairly sure I won't have Internet the whole way at any rate. The easiest way to contact me will be by text message. Those of you who have my number are good, otherwise:

Text sky@dreamwidth
Text duelist@livejournal

Note that these are set friends/access only and I can't really reply directly, but I'll find a way to get back to you 8(

Also, if you have my AIM, I will be on mobile IM so you should be able to message me there and have it come to my phone! People on my friends/access list can see my AIM name via my profile (DW / LJ).

And of course if all else fails, there's trusty email. :D That's on my profile too.

Let me know if anyone has any questions, tomorrow I'm off to Canadaaaaaa /o/

Dreamwidth is officially in open beta starting today :D

(If you don't know what DW is, you can read my previous posts under the dreamwidth tag for relevant links. Or just check out the site homepage, the FAQ about the service, or changes and improvements DW has made to the LJ code.)

To get into DW's open beta, you can either buy paid time (starts at $3 for a month of service, or you can go all the way up to Seed Accounts [perm] for $200), or you can snag an invite code from someone. If you're a registered Open ID user on dreamwidth.org, or if you're a member of the dw-discuss mailing list, you should be receiving an invite eventually if you don't already have a DW journal.

But for everybody else, I have four invite codes left to give out. Sorry, all spoken for D: I have a couple people waiting on invites, but any remaining ones will be thrown up for grabs in a future post.

If you want one, comment here. First come first served :x If I get any more, I'll post about it on my LJ again at that time.

Also note that this is a real open beta, not a Google open beta. There will most likely be a few service hiccups here and there as the place gets off the ground. But so far I've had a great experience in DW, and the staff running the site are very nice, friendly, and helpful and try to respond promptly to all problems.
